Estes Design and Manufacturing, a leading provider of precision sheet metal fabrication and manufacturing services, is celebrating its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of growth, diversification and manufacturing
expertise. Founded by Larry and Diana Estes on November 22, 1976, the Indianapolis-based company has grown from a two-employee operation serving the agricultural industry into a full-service manufacturing partner offering precision sheet metal fabrication, welding, assembly, rapid prototyping and CNC machining to a wide range of industries.
At age 29, Larry Estes, a Purdue University graduate and a man of deep faith, established the business with 1,200 square feet of floor space. Starting with a modest facility, the company steadily built its capabilities while navigating the challenges that affected manufacturers across Indiana and the Midwest in the 1980s. Despite economic uncertainty and manufacturing upheaval throughout the region, Estes continued to invest in its future. In 1985, the company expanded its team and its facility to 32,000 square feet, demonstrating the resilience that would help shape its business for years to come.
Since then, Estes Design and Manufacturing has nearly tripled its facility space, continued to push the boundaries of sheet metal fabrication, expanded its manufacturing services and diversified its business portfolio. The company has added advanced technologies, including a fully automated fabrication cell, 3D laser welding and 5-axis CNC machining. It has also launched new divisions serving product developers who need rapid prototyping, builders and developers who install mailboxes, and public safety departments that need secure weapons storage. The shift from serving only agricultural businesses to supporting medical, food processing, aerospace, defense, data center, office furniture, renewable energy, construction, and first responder customers was an intentional strategy.
“One of the things we’ve learned in the last 50 years is that to be successful you have to diversify,” said Ron Estes, Senior Vice President. “Our mailbox operation has grown alongside our weapon lockers for law enforcement, and our rapid prototyping services help customers bring quality products to market faster.”
Tim Estes, President of the family-owned company, credits its longevity to the people and values that have guided its operations.
“We’re grateful not only for the success of this business, but also for those who have dedicated their time, effort and trust to everything we do,” said Tim Estes. “Our employees, our customers and our faith have shaped the Estes name into what it is today.”
That commitment continues to guide the next generation of company leadership. Ryan Estes, Vice President of Operations, emphasized the importance of maintaining the principles on which the business was built as the company looks toward its future.
“As a management team, we are committed to running our operations ethically, with integrity, and in a manner that honors our family name and our faith in Christ,” said Ryan Estes.
As Estes Design and Manufacturing marks this milestone, the company remains focused on investing in its people, technology and capabilities to support customers across an expanding range of industries. From its humble beginnings in a 1,200-square-foot facility to its current role as a diversified manufacturing partner, the company’s 50-year history reflects a continued willingness to adapt, invest and build for the future.
